Late Wednesday afternoon I was one of the featured poets who read on the lawn by the Altadena Farmers Market where many families were lounging.  Khadija Anderson was the organizer and host.  And I performed three of my classic food poems: Owed To Aluminum, The Planet Of The Oreos, and French Toast.

Then, that same evening I was the featured poet for Jessica Wilson's Writer Wednesdays at Bob's Espresso Bar in North Hollywood.  I read seven poems chosen at random from seven of my chapbooks: Just One Cell In The Concrete Bloodstream, Sense, Desktop Love, Why Jupiter Rains Tears, The man with small hands, Cube, and Model.

Featured Host!

I was a host, featured poet and writing workshop leader on Saturday evening for Poetrypalooza at the Friends Cafe in Monrovia.  I also performed "Eaton Canyon Alien" with featured musician Barry Schwam (above left) on the Theramin.  Here's the poem I wrote in the workshop (metaphorically using objects in the room):

POETRY CAFÉ

I love to write fresh poems
They smell like steaming coffee

The flowers in my brain
get posted on a small paper bulletin board

Then people can see the menu
of my thoughts, like watching
the spots on a spotted chair

Each line is an easel
for a feeling
hanging like a lamp

Sometimes I think I am
a soda can wanting to
outshine a plate of cake

But the truth is I wish something more
to be as ubiquitous as the imitation wall clock
on your laptop

A coupla school gigs...

On May 16th I performed poetry and offered writing ideas for the students of Mrs. Guarino's 9th grade classes at Clark Magnet High School in La Crescenta.

On May 31st I was a judge for the 2012 Alhambra High School vs San Gabriel High School poetry slam at San Gabriel High School.

And a poem inspired by the...

THEATER

My mind is a stage
looking out
on the world

My thoughts, scaffolding
for the spots
about my brain

My ears are windows
which check for a click
so I know the lights are on

When I close my eyes,
the resulting black curtains
are lit with little
bulbs like I’m on TV

One crimson lantern hangs
from my mouth
quietly screaming
I am just a single voice

I feel like an unplugged
microphone stand casts
a shadow on my soul

All the people
gathered around me
judge my performance

I think I see a door
to quickly hide behind
in the warm darkness

Rooms I've entered
through my life—
closed doors now

Wait, a small red
ribbon on the floor
of my heart…

a reason to live
