Review!

As I read Don Kingfisher Campbell’s collection of his published poems, Planet of the Oreos, I discovered versatility in his poetry I overlooked before. His poems vary in style, subject matter, and form. He can be lyrical or narrative, or both. On top of that, they are much deeper and more complex than they seem at first glance. They are not merely about the everyday subjects their titles may suggest—modern relationships, planets, brownies, what have you—but the human condition underneath those things which is unique and relatable at the same time. Mr. Campbell is an unparalleled poetic spirit whose works can be appreciated by those who are willing to delve into them.

SOUVENIRS: I’ve lost count of all the Kingfisher poetry books which have come out the last two centuries, but he never fails to surprise me as in the concluding stanza in poem 18 of Souvenirs, Horror and 08, Green. The latter was also a descending stair poem that was converted to a shoe by last four word line heel. Clever. I enjoyed my visit with the Analog Kid, the trip to Seal Beach and Twilight in the Trump Zone but Don’s five page poem, WeChat, was by far my favorite. Of course the course of true love never runs smooth today no more than it did in the day of the lovers in Midsummer’s Night Dream but at least on with online right mate match quests, you have more options. Well, actually, maybe too many. It might seem finding Holy Grail is a lark compared to finding true love on the internet but there’s a reason, of all the potential matches, he loves Lulu the best. THE PLANET OF THE OREOS: On The Planet of the Oreos you are On a Planet Where “Bare trees like zombies reach up at night to the stars” and “Dream Horses “Gallop through the rivers” of your mind. On your Joshua Tree Trip the view of Buddha-like mountains instills a reverent response. But suburban Sunny Vale with “Sidewalk banks decorated with green oaks and bonsai bushes” is also inspiring. On the Oreo planet trek, we learn there are Thirteen Ways of Looking at Poppies and 13 Ways of Looking at Little Chocolate Donuts. The lovers of this planet are the most intelligent homo sapiens in our galaxy. In Science Oreo male lovers can’t “stop gazing upon the summer smooth clavicle of her statuesque gladiolus.” In the poem, In Memory of, Kingfisher writes a bio of a poet whose “ birthday was Halloween”... who “held poetry readings just to share his addiction” who “was myopic” but “that didn't stop him from seeking... who “endured small hands but boy could they write” I couldn’t agree more. -- Carl Stilwell

REVIEWS: A Poet to Learn From

Don Kingfisher Campbell’s poetry never fails to surprise its readers with unusual language and images. Get ready to be stunned by twenty-six fresh poems from his latest chapbook “Play House.”
One thing I admire about Don is he brings out the unexpected in the ordinary—a browned banana, a stuffed alien, a little girl in the supermarket, etc. He gives his readers microscopic glimpses into what he experiences by resorting to the concrete and literal instead of clichéd metaphors. Love is not expressed by the moon and the stars but a “paisley comforter” and “cleanly cased pillows.” That’s what you will see in his opening poem “Play House.” Don is daring in his choices of subjects, not avoiding but confronting the controversial and uncomfortable. You will see that in the second poem in this dynamic collection. Don’s poetry is unpretentious but effective. He has a vast vocabulary which enables him to give everything he describes proper names and details. He is definitely a master of modern poetry. ~ Jackie Chou

What happens if you are a nationally published poet as well as a poetry publisher and teacher and you enter the DKC Play House and your website date asks you, “What is your profession?” As you tour this funky Play House and come to poem 26, “The Year of Being Single", you can readily see the true course of love runs no more smoother in our digital times than it did in Shakespeare’s age. But fret not. If Romeo had lived with modern plumbing, he may well have expressed his love for Juliet in similar words as in the tenth poem, “I’m going to take a shower now.” But be careful, Juliet, if you’re carnivorous. In “Animals” DKC sees “you spoon the dead into your mouth.” Kingfisher has also a few cosmic poems I like. I found out for example in “Analogy Planets” that Mercury is “just another pockmarked rock.” Many may take exception to argument in poem 31, “God,” saying the reason God “created matter and anti-matter” was "to fill the void in his life” but I find it most plausible. I enjoyed my visit to the DKC Play House and believe you will also.-- Carl Stilwell aka CaLokie

Loved much of it. Liked it all. Favorites were 1 Hit Wonders, Things asked on first dates. Wait! I 'm not through.... And The Year of Being Single but those are the bias picks of a guy married to the same dame 48 years. A bit of a voyeur. I enjoyed the metaphor of comets crashing and the reminiscent tone of Rialto. Yes, for me Play House was a joyful romp.~ Gregory Foster
